Important Information About Viagra

Viagra

Viagra is a prescription drug used to treat erection difficulties, such as erectile dysfunction (ED). Since it first became available in 1998, the prescription drug Viagra has helped about 16 million men around the world improve their sex lives. Amazingly, 9 tablets are dispensed every second worldwide. And no other therapy or prescription drug for erectile dysfunction has been studied as much or has the same amount of real-world experience as Viagra since its launch. It's no wonder more than 600,000 doctors have chosen the prescription drug Viagra for their patients with ED.

What is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability of a man to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for his sexual needs or the needs of his partner. Most men experience this at some point in their lives, usually by age 40, and are not psychologically affected by it. Some men, however, experience chronic, complete erectile dysfunction (impotence), and others, partial or brief erections. Frequent erectile dysfunction can cause emotional and relationship problems, and often leads to diminished self-esteem. Erectile dysfunction has many causes, most of which are treatable, and is not an inevitable consequence of aging.

Erectile dysfunction is strongly age related. As many as 30 million men may be affected in the USA. While there is an estimated prevalence across all ages of about 10% (making erectile dysfunction common), the prevalence rises to over 50% in men between 50 and 70 years of age, though it is not an inevitable consequence of normal ageing. It is also associated with a number of organic disorders and diseases. In diabetes, for instance, it occurs in up to 40% of men.

ED is treatable at any age, and awareness of this fact has been growing. More men have been seeking help and returning to normal sexual activity because of improved, successful treatments for ED.

How is ED treated?

Conditions that are common often become expensive if an effective treatment comes along. For erectile dysfunction what most of us know (or think) is that treatments are reserved for funny boxes in the pages of our more popular newspapers. We might be dimly aware that a number of physical treatments have been used, including semi-rigid or inflatable implants, vacuum constriction devices, and vascular surgery. Some of these can be effective in some men, but they can be expensive and may not be appropriate in every affected man.

Drugs for treating ED can be taken orally, injected directly into the penis, or inserted into the urethra at the tip of the penis. In March 1998, the Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra, the first pill to treat ED. Taken an hour before sexual activity, Viagra works by enhancing the effects of nitric oxide, a chemical that relaxes smooth muscles in the penis during sexual stimulation and allows increased blood flow.

Viagra

Viagra® Tablets: SILDENAFIL (sil-DEN-a-fil), is only available with a prescription; by Pfizer® Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Viagra is the first oral drug for male impotence. It works by dilating blood vessels in the penis, allowing the inflow of blood needed for an erection.

Viagra causes erections only during sexual excitement. It does not work in the absence of arousal.

If you have heart problems severe enough to make sexual activity a danger, you should avoid using Viagra. Use it cautiously — if at all — if you've had a heart attack, stroke, or life-threatening heart irregularities within the past 6 months. Be equally cautious if you have severe high or low blood pressure, heart failure, or unstable angina (crushing heart pain that occurs at any time).

If you take Viagra and develop cardiac symptoms (for example, dizziness, nausea, and chest pain) during sexual activity, do not continue. Alert your doctor to the problem as soon as possible.

If you have a condition that might result in long-lasting erections, such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma (a disease of the bone marrow), or leukemia, use Viagra with caution. Also use cautiously if you have a genital problem or deformity such as Peyronie's disease. If an erection lasts more than 4 hours, seek treatment immediately. Permanent damage and impotence could result.

If you have a bleeding disorder, a stomach ulcer, or the inherited eye condition known as retinitis pigmentosa, use this medication with caution. Its safety under these circumstances has not yet been studied.

Remember that Viagra offers no protection from transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. This drug is not for use by women. Its effects during pregnancy have not been studied.

Directions

Taking Viagra approximately 1 hour before sexual activity works best for most men. Depending on how and when the drug works for you, an interval of one-half hour to as much as 4 hours may prove ideal.
  • If you miss a dose Viagra is not for regular use. Take it only before sexual activity.
  • Storage instructions Store at room temperature.

Cautions

Do not take Viagra if you are taking any nitrate-based drug, including nitroglycerin patches (Nitro-Dur, Transderm-Nitro), nitroglycerin ointment (Nitro-Bid, Nitrol), nitroglycerin pills (Nitro-Bid, Nitrostat), and isosorbide pills (Dilatrate-SR, Isordil, Sorbitrate). Combining Viagra with these drugs can cause a severe drop in blood pressure. If Viagra gives you an allergic reaction, do not use it again.
